Open Questions About Romeo

Do you like Romeo in the opening scenes, before he meets Juliette?

Does he seem strong.. or weak to you? Can you find some quotations that show he is particularly strong.. or weak?

Why do you think Shakespeare chose to present him in such a 'lovesick' manner?

  1. I don't appreciate Romeo at all because he is obsessed with love from the beginning to the end. He is so blind that he uses his friends and enjoys that and at the end he dies because of love. Maybe it wouldn't happen if he wasn't crazy about Juliet... His lovesickness makes him weak to me because as we can see he committed suicide because of Juliet's death.
    Quotes:
    "Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs;
    Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes;
    Being vex'd a sea nourish'd with lovers' tears:
    What is it else? a madness most discreet,
    A choking gall and a preserving sweet."
    Romeo describes love in abstract extremes.
    Maybe Shakespeare wanted to show the importance of love in life by exaggerating it in the Romeo character.

  2. Contrary to Berkand, I appreciate Romeo. He is indeed affectionate and devoted to Juliette who is everything to him. Some people may say he is way too romantic but in my opinion he is truly in love with Juliette and that's why he is "obsessed" with her. I would rather say he is loyal to her.
    Nevertheless, he might be irritating -because he is often depressed- but he is a nice friend to Benvolio and Mercutio who are in particular helping him through a rough period at the beginning of the play.
    I guess it is normal giving everything , even his life, to a person you love to death.

    "Oh blessed, blessed night! I'm afeard,/ Being in night, all this is but a dream,/Too flattering sweet to be substantial." , Act 2, scene 2

  3. I agree with both of you. I like Romeo because he seems to be a nice guy, he is a good friend and is devoted to Juliette. But before he meets her, he is in love with a girl named Rosaline and he almost dies of sorrow because he is in love with her but she doesn't want to sleep with him (wich is not very romantic and I did not particularly sorry for him). But as soon as he meets Juliette he completely forgets about Rosaline and falls in love with her in no time. It's way too much and the way he talks can be annoying.
