open questions about Mercutio

What purpose does Mercutio serve in the play, and how should the audience feel about his death?

Would you like a friend like Mercutio?

Is he really a good friend to Romeo?

  2. Mercutio would sometimes annoy me because he is always thinking about partying and having fun: he seems to be incapable of being serious. But I think he is exactly the friend Romeo needs, he shows him that you can be happy without burning love, but taking pleasure of everything. If Mercutio tried to understand the despair of Romeo he couldn’t and that would make Romeo sadder because he would think about his impossible love… At the contrary, even if it’s not the ideal solution, Mercutio succeeds in making Romeo stop mopping around by making him take drugs. Romeo seems to have fun and to forget his misery. Mercutio shares with his friend what he prefers and that makes him be a really good friend to Romeo.
Mercutio is in a certain way a caricature like “I don’t need feelings, just sex and drugs!” which makes him be complementary to Romeo.
His death is definitively sad: he dies for Romeo in order to protect his honour. He becomes one of the innocent uselessly sacrificed when he belongs to none of the clans.

  3. Mercutio’s character is very important in the play, because of him; Romeo and Juliet met each other and became lovers at the Capulet’s party. I like his characters, he’s funny, amazing, and he likes having fun at parties or anywhere else; he doesn’t take things seriously especially love. He’s the type of friend that Romeo needs, someone who makes him happy and to have fun. He’s really a good friend to Romeo; he’s always there for him and helps him. I think that after reading the book or watching the film, the audience will be very sad about the death of mercutio because his character is very amazing and makes the audience laugh. I would really like a friend like Mercutio because of his characters.
