What do you think of the Bazz Luhrmann adaptation of Romeo and Juliette?

Do you agree or disagree with the following critics:

1. James Berardinelli
"Ultimately, no matter how many innovative and unconventional flourishes it applies, the success of any adaptation of a Shakespeare play is determined by two factors: the competence of the director and the ability of the main cast members. Luhrmann, Danes, and DiCaprio place this Romeo and Juliet in capable hands. And, while such a loud, brash interpretation may not go down in cinematic history as the definitive version of the play, hopefully it will open a few eyes and widen the audience willing to venture into any movie bearing the credit "based on the play by William Shakespeare."

2. IMDb User Review
"Danes does a great job playing the flirty Juliet. The movie follows the original script very accurately."

3. The bad reviews
" Baz Luhrmann has made a film that (a) will dismay any lover of Shakespeare, and (b) bore anyone lured into the theater by promise of gang wars, MTV-style."

  1. I agree with the first and the second critic about the adaptation of "Romeo and Juliette" by Baz Luhrmann.
It is indeed a great movie which follows exactly the play; nevertheless,it takes place in a much more modern context.
I think Baz Luhrmann had a thoughtful idea by keeping the original lines.
In addition, the actor's way of playing enhances the actual adaptation of the Shakesperian play and makes it even more likable.
I guess , it was a very tough work for the director modernizing the play and put it in a violent world; even though , the movie reflects -as usual- passion , youth and intensity. He is able to convey deeper feelings and emotions throughout the movie and in my opinion, the camerawork was very well done. He manages interwoven two completely different subjects as Passion/Hate , Peace/War or Poison/Medicine.
Sometimes, it is as if we are looking through a window and a scene is passing naturally in front of our eyes.

Nonetheless, some people may not like the movie because of its deformation with the historical context (critic N°3). Yes , I can say it can disturb a bit but you just have to be a little open minded to appreciate the movie.
It captures the innocence of the teenagers and shows very well how intense young love can be.

  2. At the beginning of the film, I thought it was a parody of Romeo and Juliet but after seeing the following I think this film fits well the story in a modern context. The personalities of the different characters are respected, but adapted to our time. Musics are well chosen because they give emotion to the film and actors plays their roles very well. In my opinion, everyone should have seen this film.

    1. We think it’s a good adaptation in a modern context while keeping the original texts which sometimes leads to a strange sensation when the characters speak. We would have expected a more contemporary language. However we find that the exaggerated action scenes and the extravagant physical appearance of the characters bring a funny aspect to the story. It sa lot our attention and we really enjoy watching this film.
