Discuss how the motif is seen throughout Romeo and Juliet.
Throughout the story characters dont care about how people really are. if they
are good looking, they just fall in love with their beauty.
This happened with
Romeo and Juliet. Romeo see's juliet for the first time and instantly falls in
love. this refers to when romeo said:
"for i ne'er saw true beauty till this
night".
He said this in act 2.he later learns that she is a capulet but he is a
montague. the conflict between the familys intervenes with their relationship.
they dont really know eachother, they only know that they are good looking.
later in the story their relationship progresses because they dont care about
their families conflict. they love eachother now for who they actully are and
will do anything to be with eachother,no matter what their families think. this
turns out to be disasterous for the two of them.
in act 2 friar had pointed out
romeos mistake of loving juliet based on looks alone. he says:
"so soon forsaken?
young mens love then lies not truly in their hearts but in their eyes."

RépondreSupprimerOuter beauty is a major benefactor in the lives of Romeo and the people around him. Most of the marriages in his time were arranged or only based on looks. Romeo is no different from the common crowd. In the beginning of the play he is depressed over the fact that he knows that Rosaline is a nun and that their love could never be. "For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." This was Romeo who was saying this towards Juliet. He had just talked to Benvolio about how beautiful Rosaline was and how he loved her and yet he just completely forgets about her and starts loving Juliet instead. "So soon forsaken? Young men's love then lies not truly in their hearts but in their eyes." Friar was talking to Romeo in this quote and the Friar was condemning Romeo's approach to finding true love. Another example about someone judging another person by outer beauty is Lady Capulet and the Nurse when they were talking about Paris to Juliet, "Why, the man is made of wax." Which was a compliment to Paris directed to Juliet saying how good looking he was but Juliet was not even thinking about marriage. However, when she goes to the party and sees Romeo she instantly falls in love with him only based on his looks. Towards the end of the book Romeo is truly in love with his wife, Juliet, and for the most part he knows her and has talked to her so he loves her for her inner beauty. In the beginning of the play he casts aside Rosaline like garbage as soon as he sees Juliet but when Juliet "dies" he would rather commit suicide than live without her. "Here's to my love!... Thus with a kiss I die." As you can see Romeo changed from only loving women by their looks to truly loving Juliet for how good of a person she was, and Juliet loved him too.
