Prince Escalus is the ruler of Verona. In the movie he is an officer who judges the Capulet and Montague after the fight between their boys. He doesn't like criminals as we can see on this quote : "Rebellious subjects, enemies to peace, Profaners of this neighbour-stained steel" and he threatens any disturber of peace with death.
He only appears three times in the play.
To my opinion, Prince Escalus is quite important in the movie as he appears as an officer in order to prevent the Capulet and Montague boys from killing each other. For the movie he has a necessary role.
However I think he is useless in the play because he was originally a Prince and Princes don't arrest and judge people, they just sit in their throne and rule the whole country. For me this role has to be played by a troop commander and this would fit perfectly in the movie and make more sense.

I think he should be more present in the play because he is interesting. I don't really agreee with you when you say he is useless, he doesn't do a lot but what he does is important.

We don't agree whit you when you say that Prince Escalus just is useless in the play. For us he has got a very important role as he represents authority in the city of Verona and doesn't just sit on his throne all day long since he is very often present after a fight between the Capulet’s and the Montague’s. He probably is the one how stopped the two families from killing each other by reasoning them during all these years, although he failed in the end. He also always did his best to protect the city from their numerous fights.

RépondreSupprimerI agree with Zara, Rebecca and Romy, I think prince Escalus is doing the best he can do it's not easy to stop the violence in a town in one day. He tried to reduced it but the two family are very single minded, When prince escalus take the descision to banned Romeo from the town, it's a very important descision because with that he wanted to stop the riot.
